We are renting a car in Italy and driving south to Matera and Alberobella for a few days and then to sorrento for a week. We want to visit Pompeii area also. Is this possible to do on way to matera all in a day. Or should we do as a day trip from sorrento. We will have our car in sorrento so not sure if we should drive or train to Pompeii ? I would definitely do it by train from Sorrento.
What are your plans with the car for a week in Sorrento? I would try ditch it beforehand if it's just going to sit st your hotel, maybe in Salerno.

we are then driving back to Rome via Naples. We thought cat could be handy in sorrento. Hotel has car space

When I stayed in Sorrento I had a car, but took the train to Pompeii. Had no regrets
Didn't have to find and pay for parking and the hotel lot definitely safer than any lot in Pompeii
Count this a BIG vote for the train
