We will be driving from Ljubljana, Slovenia to Ortesei in the Dolomites. When looking at Google Maps, it gives us three choices, north into Austria via E66, across from Kranjska Gora onSS52, or south via A1/E70. We are looking for the most scenic and pleasant route. I am sure any of them would be a beautiful drive, but looking for advice from those who have driven this.

I have only been on the Austria - Dolomites section, but the northern route via Villach & Lienz, even though it requires an Austrian toll sticker, is the best compromise between speed and scenery. The southern route is 100% out IMO, busy and not scenic.
As for a middle route skirting Austria and cutting across the Dolomites via Kranjska Gora, Tolmezzo, Cortina: stunning of course, but it takes over 6 hours with a lot of curves. It would be tiresome unless mountain driving is your thing.

Balso, thank you for your wonderful recommendation. We were leaning towards the southern route, so I am glad I asked and received your answer.
Would you happen to know if construction on the Karawanks Tunnel could cause long delays or detours? If there was, it looks like there is a detour (87) that connects at Greifenburg, but it adds an extra hour and appears to be quite curvy.
