Driving Rome to Pisa

Hi we are driving Rome to Pisa thinking the coastal route (we love to see water)would be more scenic but I'm now told the internal route is better to see - I know the coast route is a little longer... but does anyone know if we'll actually see any water? Or should we stay inland and go through all the quaint towns, etc? Any advice greatly appreciated. Leaving Tuesday 9/18

Not sure of your time frames or travel schedule, but if you are driving north from Rome, it would be a shame to miss Assisi in Umbria or the Tuscan hill country. An overnight in Montepulciano or Siena would add dimension and scenery to your trip if you have the time and you haven't seen these places before. You won't see anything like it on the coast. Just a thought.

Thanks Larry- We only have one day to drive up. We are driving to Pisa for a two hour stop - then onto stay in San Gimignano for 2 days.

Do you know if you can see the coast on the coastal route?

Angela, One thing to remember is that Pisa used to be a coastal town. It's not anymore. There are places around Pisa where, if you squint and you're up on a hill, you may be able to see a glimmer of water in the distance.

If you have the time, take a slower, more meandering route through Umbria and Tuscany. You'll be glad you did.

I see. Did not know that... so, again, sorry to sound slow here... on the drive up, we won't see the ocean even south of Pisa?

Angela,

You will see the Sea. There are several spots where you can see the water. We have not driven all the way to Pisa - but about half way.

Enjoy it!!!

Angela, I probably should have been a little more clear. You will be able to see some water here and there. But it's nothing like the Pacific Coastal Highway.

You will see portions of the Sea, but like J said, it's not like PCH.
