We went to Florence in early November and around Valentine's Day we received a notice from AutoEurope of 3 driving infractions at a cost of 30 euros apiece. Since it was charged to our card, we didn't worry about it. Well today we received 3 individual tickets for "circulated on roads reserved to other vehicles and indicated by traffic signs." whatever that means. these cost 106.05 euros each. I REALLY don't want to pay them, either! who do we contact to get a picture of the plate "at the crime scene"?
Welcome to the (in)famous ZTL club. Long story short, many cities in Italy, Florence especially, have restricted driving zones that tourists don't get to drive in. Cross the invisible boundary line and the automated cameras getcha, apparently three times in your case.
Then, your rental agency kindly charges your credit card (90 euros this time) for turning your information over to the authorities, at which point, after many months, you receive the actual traffic tickets in the mail.
At this point, your options are to a) contact someone and try to argue that you were legitimately in the zone--for instance, if traveling to your hotel--b) pay the tickets and chalk it up to experience, or c) take your chances and ignore the tickets. I'm not sure about getting a picture of the plate. Presumably the rental car agency would have one?
