Driving over 78 years old

Is there an age limit for drivers? I haven't been able to find that. I am 78 years old.

I rented a car for 3 weeks 2 years ago in Tuscany with no trouble.

thnx

I believe in some european countries there is . check with www.autoeurope.com for your best rental rates and the specific age limitations for countries you wish to rent/drive in. also mention has been made that international dl is recom now.(www.gemut.com).

The short answer is maybe. Some companies have a max as well as a minimum. We have used Thrifty out of Venice before and the minimum age was 21 and the max was age 75 for renters and drivers. I could drive since I had passed 21 quite a ways back but my dad couldn't since he was a ways past 75.

I'd suggest checking when you are looking for rentals. Some may have no max or a higher max age. I'd also try to get them to refer you to something in writing either on a website or by fax. You wouldn't want surprises at the rental desk.

Autoeurope says that you have to be 21 to RENT a car. I can't find anything about driving, except a statement that there will be an extra charge for a driver under the age of 25.

Nan - Autoeurope is actually a consolidator. They act as an agent. The actual rental will be from one of their partner companies. I think that the company you finally end up with will govern the rental rules.

I'd call autoeurope and ask them directly.

On this particular issue, I agree. Autoeurope sets you up with a rental agency in your destination in Europe. Most of the policies are well explained in Autoeurope's documents and on their website. But I would call the humans in Maine on their 24/7 toll-free number to make sure they know your age and you know the policies for the company they'll be reserving with for you.

Thanks, all, will certainly get in touch with them. It looks like I need to check with the individual auto rental companies, but I will get more information when I talk with a "human"

Some locations/companies in the UK and Northern Ireland won't rent to anyone over 69. The maximum age in the Republic of Ireland is 75. Drivers over 70 may have trouble renting in the Czech Republic, Greece, Poland, Slovakia, and Turkey. If you're having a problem, consider leasing (technically, buying the car and selling it back), which generally has less stringent age restrictions. (above is a paraphrase from Rick's ETBD 2009, p. 127).
