Driving Lucca - Rome

We are driving, in one day, from Lucca to Rome. The fast way, according to Google Maps, is to go to Florence and then take the E35 south to the A1 to Rome. We would like to enjoy some of Tuscany on our way. We are thinking of stopping in Vinci (just north of Empoli) on our way, to check out the museum. We could then go down through Poggibonsi to Siena, then take the A1 to Rome. Would that be scenic without making it a unmanageable drive for 1 day? Could we plan to stop one other place besides Vinci on our way? If so, where would you stop? Would you skip Siena and instead drive past Greve in Chianti, then rejoin the A1 at Incisa in Val d'Arno? We are 3 adults and 2 kids (10 and 13), and we are driving all day, so maybe a drive through the wine country doesn't make sense on this trip? I have a book about scenic drives in Tuscany, but I'm having trouble piecing something together that makes sense. Thanks.

You may have to choose between a fast route, a short route and a scenic route. I have only driven it once, and that in the reverse direction, but the direct road from Empoli to Poggibonsi is very slow and not very attractive. The roads through Chianti are very attractive, but similarly slow with hills as well as bends. You then still have quite a long haul down the A1 to Rome. The choice is yours, but the pretty way can sometimes be very tiring for both driver and passengers.

Your kids are at a great age to enjoy the Vinci museum. Well worth the time & effort.
