Driving itinerary/car rentals

After much research need your reflections on this itinerary. My goal is always to use time wisely and make good connections.
Fly into Florence 4 days
Rent car drive to Volterra, San Gimignano, to Siena - 2 nights here
Drive to Perugia airport, drop off car, public transportation to Assisi
Train to Naples, on to week or more in Amalfi area

My other option is to skip Volterra and San Gimignano and use buses to Siena and Assisi.
We would be doing this in mid to late October, hoping to avoid some crowds.

Sketch out the Umbria portion of your trip for us.

While you can drive Florence-->Volterra-->San Gimignano-->Siena in a day, you won't have but a few hours in Volterra and San Gimgnano. I suggest you train from Florence to Siena and rent a car there, then take day trips. I also suggest since you have a car, devote at least one day to Siena and two days to take day trips to Volterra, San Gimignano and other nearby towns.

Personally I'd prefer to do north of Rome in one trip and south of Rome in another trip. I keep thinking of all the wonderful adventures you could have in Tuscany/Umbria with that Amalfi time, but that's just me.
