Coming from Florence, I am scheduled to return a Hertz rental car to Villa Borghese at 10:00 am on a Saturday morning in late June. Is traffic a nightmare at this time? will the ring road be backed up already? will I regret this and wish i had taken the train from Florence? thanks!
The answer to your last question is "Yes." :-)
It will be a bit busy, but not nightmarish. The ring road (GRA) is not the problem, the access road is.
The earlier the better. Certainly a Saturday will not be as difficult as a work weekday. You could talk to Hertz about turning your car in Orvieto early morning on Saturday - then riding the train into Rome. The Hertz office is just across from the train station in Orvieto. If you have to in Rome, then come earlier if possible. Also study the last 1/4 mile of your route (mapped on Google Maps) through Google Streetview. The turn into the parking garage off the Corso d'Italia is a little difficult to see as the signage at the ramp is poor, so be ready for it. Here's a peek at the signage just before the ramp. Be in the right lane and take the next "unmarked" right when you see this. You're headed downhill on the Corso d'Italia at this point. We rode our motorino often on this route when returning from the Porta di Roma Mall. (PS - NEVER try and take a motorino into this garage - Big mistake!). This article has a listing of the many Hertz vendors in Rome and surrounding areas. It may give you some more alternatives.
I didn't know there was a Hertz office near GRA x A24. That location sounds just perfect for a car drop-off: 3 blocks from highway, easy metropolitan train station within 5 min walking from office. I'll start recommending instead of the one in the EUR.
Hi Les - we just returned from Rome.. Rented a car from Hertz near the Villa Borghese on a Saturday afternoon, and then drove it out of Rome headed north to Umbria. No problem at all and we've never driven in Italy at all. So, if you have GPS in the car, I would say you shouldn't have a problem.
All: thanks for the input. we opted to take the train from Florence to Rome and avoid driving, and this worked out well. thanks again!
Hi. I wonder if I can ask for verification that the Hertz location at Villa Borghese is still open. I rented from that location 2 years ago and want to book from that location for our next trip. I have checked the Hertz website for this location and nothing comes up. Thanks in advance.
YES Go early
