I will be travelling Italy in June. My Itinerary is as follows: Florence -> Tuscany (staying near Siena) --> Positano --> Rome [each spot for 3 nights].
We would like to rent a car for the 3 days in Tuscany so we can easily explore the region. I am just having some difficulty figuring out where to drop my car off on the way to Positano. Should we rent from Florence airport and drop outside of Rome, then train to Positano? Or should we drive all the way to Naples and then train/bus to Positano from there? Or is there a totally different, better option?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I would drop the car at the Orvieto train station and then take the train to Naples; there, you have to take the Circumvesuvia to Sorrento, and the bus to Positano. When finished in the South, there is an ICE usually every hour from Naples to Rome.
The only caveats could be (1) does an ICE stop in Orvieto and (2) what the drop charge for the Florence car will be? It might be cheaper in € to return the car to Florence, however, more "expensive" in time lost .
Faster and easier to drive to Sorrento, 4H50 m. drop car, bus to Positano. 1 Hr.
The above suggestion will take close to 7 hrs. With 3 changes of luggage.
Hertz is the only provider in Orvieto. Sorrento has 4 or 5.
We are planning to drop off our car in Sorrento (using Avis.) It seems to be convenient and faster than taking two trains and a bus to get to Positano. It is important to note that the Avis Car Rental in Sorrento is open Mon - Fri regular times but only open in the mornings on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. However, they do have an after hours drop off in a secure parking garage. You may want to check this option out with your car rental agency. It will save you time, money and hassle. Good luck and happy travels!
Drop in Sorrento.
Or you can keep it in Positano and return in Rome
