driving in the Amalfi Coast

I've driven in Italy before, but have been told not to try the drive in Amalfi Coast. Personally, having to rely on public trans for an entire week seems limiting as I love nothing better than exploring the areas the bus wont take you. PLUS saving time not waiting for buses and trains. Would love some feedback on driving there. a) What is it like driving there? b) Should i get a car in Rome airport or wait till i get to Naples?
c) Public parking in Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano?? Thanks everyone!

Cricket, We loved having a car in the Amalfi Coast. If you are comfortable driving, it's really not that difficult at all. You get to stop when and where you want too. Now, parking is tricky. We found an awesome public parking lot in the center of Sorrento, which I can give you details to. When we booked our hotel in Maiori (Hotel Torre di Milo...fantastic), we made sure it came with parking. This hotel also had one of the best breakfasts in Italy!! Cheers.

We drove the Almafi coast in the spring time and loved it. My guess is that you probably would not want to drive it in the summer because it would just be too crowded. In the spring it was fine. In fact I saw people waiting for buses and I just wouldn't have the patience for it on the whole trip. We did take a bus once but I preferred the car. By the way I drove a mini van which is large but got use to the driving. Here is some advice on the driving. 1- We rented the car at the Rome airport. We enjoyed the drive down to the Amalfi coast. But there can be traffic at times so leave yourself some time if you have to be there by a certain time. Also, know where you are picking the car up and ping it off, it can be confusing. 2- Driving is tricky but very doable. I found that I was pretty nervous the first day but by the second day I was a pro. Just pay attention while you are driving. If you want to look at something along the way there are plenty of places you can pull over to view pretty sites. 3- Parking is pain. There is public parking but it can be hard to find a spot. My guess is you would not want to find parking in the summer. Again, in the spring it was tough but we always seemed to find a parking spot. Make sure your hotel has parking. 4- We traveled with 5 people so I really did enjoy having the car. I couldn't imagine carrying all that luggage on a bus. I was the only guy so guess who would be carrying most of it! 5- Make sure you request an automatic! Lots of the rentals are manual transmissions. You dont' want that. 6- You rarely get the car model you request but usually it is close in size to what you requested. Good Luck
