Note to others: the URL above doesn't work, click here to see the video clip click here for a bunch of smilesLinda: Thank you, that's cute. I'll be interested to hear what our Italian residents have to say about it.And yep, driving is different over there, but how do you explain it to the uninitiated? At least the clip will give them a bit of a heads up.And think about it, the clip just deals with the difference between Italy and the rest of the EU; I'd like to see a clip re the differences between Italy and the US/Canada!

Linda, that was awesomely hilarious! Thank you for sharing!

And, as Bill Bryson wrote in his book Neither Here Nor There, "I love the way Italians park. You turn any street corner in Rome and it looks as if you've just missed a parking competition for blind people."

Sums it up nicely!

Thanks, that was funny. Though I cannot vouch that the rest of the EU is always so mannerly and polite. You have never seen Germans fighting over parking spots before! Or all trying to get on the train at the same time and before all the others have gotten off.

That made me laugh out loud! Thanks for posting it.

I am just today beginning plans for a trip to Italy in April 2010. Having easily driven/ridden in the U.K., Belgium, France and Spain, I thought it would be lovely to rent a car for a couple of weeks in Italy and come and go as I please from a friend's house near Pisa. Thank goodness, the lack of affordable automatic transmission cars put me off and made me rethink my plans.

Trains are a beautiful thing indeed!

Susie: Many travelers to Italy have adopted this guiding principle: If there's regular train service to where I want to go, take the train. For many, cars don't pass this test (if trains go there, no need to rent a car) except in certain specific locales, such as the flexibility a rental car provides for exploring the Tuscany and Umbria "hill towns", and also Sicily. You can determine if there's regular train service to a destination you want to see by going here, inputting the starting and ending towns, date doesn't matter for using this site http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en(you're not buying a ticket), you're just looking at schedules and travel time. If it doesn't show a schedule, it probably means trains don't go there (or you spelled a name wrong).
