Driving in Puglia/Calabria

My friend and I are planning 3-4 days in Bari and surrounding small towns before heading to Sorrento/Pompei area. There appear to be decent local trains/ buses but we are considering renting a car in Bari to allow more flexibility on countryside exploring. Any input on your experiences driving in south Italy? Better off with trains/buses? Cost doesn’t seem too bad by the time one adds ups all the bus/train costs but I’ve read about problems with theft, hidden charges etc. Thanks so much!

You don’t say when this trip will take place. We drove all around Puglia and had no problems. It was, however, off-season; April or May, as I recall. I can’t speak to what it would be like at tourist time, especially at tourist magnets, like Alberobello or at beach towns. Our trip was much longer. The reason we opted for a car is that public transport looked to be very complicated and inconvenient for all the places we wanted to go.
