Driving in Italy (Naples-Giungano)

Hello!
I am looking for advice for an upcoming trip in May for a wedding. We will be going from Naples to Giungano for a wedding. My original plan was to rent a car from Naples Airport and then drive to Giungano as it appeared I would be able to do so with out having to drive through Naples. The wedding is in a villa (Domus Laeta) in Giungano, but I'm not sure what is within walking distance of the villa for food and activities. This made me think renting a car would be beneficial in an area that may have less public transit. However, everyone I am telling of my plans think I am crazy for driving in Italy. Am I? I know there's different toll roads to be aware of, but is there something else I'm missing in relationship to the ease/ability to do this? I've seen people say this area of Italy is tough to drive in since it is so popular during the "on-season." Otherwise I think there is a train/bus I can take. It just leaves me a little stranded. What would you all recommend? Any tips or helps is greatly appreciated

Do you drive in your home country? Then you can sure drive in Italy! I would never drive IN Naples, but on the outskirts, sure. I have been close to the area you are headed, and I am suspicious that there is an easy transport path to get there and even more doubtful how you would get around without a car once there without one (hopefully you will have free time).
If you still have anxiety about the drive, go to Salerno and rent from there, as it is a smaller city and closer the destination.
Get your IDP from AAA and you are all set.

I live in Italy, have for over 30 years and have travelled extensively driving my own car.
"Driving in Italy" is not the same as "Driving in the area around Naples/Caserta"
The former just requires being able to drive, aware that Italians can be a little stressed when driving and knowledge of road signs and ZTL restrictions etc. No problem, although full no-excess insurance is always comforting when you hire a car.
Driving in the area around Naples/Caserta: this is more stressful. It's not impossible and if the alternative is to be stranded in a small village you may have to do it. Just be aware that in this part of Italy other drivers may not always respect a stop or a give way, may cut right in front of you to turn even if you have right of way. Take it slowly, don't care if they keep on the car horn behind you if you hesitate, always go around a town if you can possibly avoid going through it. If possible travel early morning or about 2/3pm in the afternoon when there are fewer people on the roads.......
Looking at the route you'd take from Naples airport, you should be find - get straight on the autostrada - where 'normal' rules prevail - no problem there, then the SS18 - I've driven along that, it's ok....mid afternoon would be even better.

Welcome to the forum! We were in Italy last month and drove all around Campania, including Caserta (we spent the night there and toured Reggio di Caserta) but not Naples proper, with no problems at all. On the whole the streets are narrower than in the US and so are the cars, so it works out. There was some traffic but the other cars stayed in their lanes and obeyed traffic signals. And the motorways were easier to navigate than interstate highways in a large US city. As far as ZTLs (Traffic Limitation Zones), Giungano looks too small to have one but if they don’t want you to drive on the back streets it will be clearly marked. In general, as you approach a town center just watch for lit-up signs that say “ZTL Closed” in red and then don’t go that way. The ones I saw were at intersections where you could easily turn instead of going straight or not make a turn to avoid entering the zone. Some of the signs said “ZTL Open” in green which I took to mean it was okay to go there at that time. We’ll see if I get a charge from the rental company!

In any case, I think the benefits of having a car to get around in the Giungano area far outweigh any hassles of driving in Italy. Good luck with the trip!

I don’t know if you plan to fly to Naples or arrive by train from Rome, but, unless you are flying to NAP I would rent a car from Salerno to minimize driving. If you arrive by train from Rome go to Salerno. There are several car rental agencies near the station (Avis-Budget, Hertz, Europcar). Then from there you basically drive along the sea promenade and the coastal highway and be in Giungano in less than one hour. Driving outside of Naples is not a problem. Do not drive inside the city of Naples unless you like living on the edge and you are tired of living.
