We have actual driving directions, but does anyone have any general comments/recommendations regarding driving from Peretola Airport to Areas south of Florence along the A1?
Thanks!
Sure. Having driven that piece a few times.
Driving: Stay in the right lane, use the left lane only to pass and do it quickly. If you see someone flash his lights at you in the rear view mirror get to the right as fast as you can because they are coming at you very rapidly. AND, they get pissed if you are in the way. Also, maintain a reasonable speed, don't impede traffic. On the A1 this shouldn't be a problem but on the back roads if you stop in a lot of traffic it is difficult to get going again as everyone moves when you stop. Keep moving if you can.
Sightseeing: Arrezo, Cortona, Montepulciano, Orvieto, Terni (Marmore Falls), Tivoli, Hadrian's Villa, etc. Depends on how far south you are going and how much time you have. Sites will require leaving the A1 and returning.
Thank you Gordon, very helpful info!
On freeways you cannot overtake vehicles using the right lanes. You can do so using the lanes to the left. So for example the A1 is largely a 6 lane freeway with 3 lanes each direction. If a car is cruising in the middle lane, you can pass them only using the left lane, not the slow lane on the right.
