driving in italy

I was reading about the zona disco in Italian cities. I understand that only cars registered for these areas are permitted in the zone, otherwise they will photograph your car and then after your trip you start getting bills in the mail and charges on your visa. My cousin is still getting charges from a trip two taken two years ago. So, I am wondering if there is any warning that you are close to entering a zona disco. I imagine myself accidently driving into these zones despite my best intentions.

This is a topic of frequent discussion on this site. The term for these zones is "ZTL" and if you enter those letters in the search box above you'll find lots of info.

The ZTLs are usually well marked, but the signs can be easy to miss amongst all the other signs on the streets. Assume if you're nearing a the historical center of Italian cities you should find a place to park as soon as possible and hoof it in or catch a bus.
