Driving in Florence 2023

We are staying in the SanGimignano area and exploring a day trip to Florence. We have a rental car but due to all the warnings will not be driving in the heart of the city.
Is there a place outside the city to park and take a train etc. into the city? Or get on a train at another city to the south?
Thanks, Tim

Poggibonsi is closest train station and it is the one that also serves San Gimignano. I do believe there is reasonable bus service to Poggibonsi if you don’t want to drive there and park.

You can easily drive to the Villa Costanza car park right off the A1 and take the 20 minute tram ride into the Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence and avoid all ZTL issues. It should take you no more than an hour to get to this car park from San Gimignano. You park, go buy your tram ticket, and wait for the next tram. Be sure to validate your ticket as soon as you get on the tram.
When we drive to Florence from our rental villa near San Gusme, we normally park in Garage Lungarno just off of the Ponte Vecchio on the Oltrarno side of Florence, but we decided to try the Villa Costanza car park instead last October. The drive into Florence to the Garage Lungarno can be a bit tense if you are not very alert and aware of where you are going.

With Garage Lungarno, you have to park and then go to the office and request they add your license plate to the “White List” to avoid a ZTL violation.

Thanks folks... Much appreciated this will be very helpful. I love the idea of the tram and it will be good practice for us as a few days later we will be returning our car at the airport and taking another tram to Santa Maria Novella.
Have a great day!
