Driving in Dolomites in September

Hello everyone. This is my first post in this wonderful community and I’m excited! My wife and I will be here in September and wanted to spend one day driving. I’ve read of the wonders of the Great Dolomite Road and also seen the Shorter Loop drive through the Sella pass that Rick recommends. A few questions. Are there restrictions on driving due to weather or government decree? We read that they were trying to limit driving through the Sella Pass, but it’s hard to find hard info. Second, given a full day, is there one you’d recommend? And finally, are there quicker return routes available to Bolzano, or is the only way back via the scenic drive?

Thanks so much,

Andy

Thanks Joe. I was more interested in knowing if there’s a faster highway to make the return trip, or if it would require going through mountain passes. Just trying to time it out.

Does anyone know if they’re limiting driving through the Sella Pass at that time of year?

Hello Andy: I was in the Dolomites in Sept 2021. It was spectacular. Do check if the day your drive coincides with any local special events. For example, many passes were closed to car traffic during our stay because of the cycling championship.
