Driving - IDP required??

Hi everyone, my family and I are considering renting a car for 1 day to drive from Rome to Florence, during our week trip to Italy. I have seen some mixed reviews on whether an International Driving Permit is required in Italy. Does anyone have experience on this? I have driven in Ireland with no problem, is Italy different? What circumstances would require me to show an IDP? Thanks in advance!

Mary, You've probably read my usual comments on driving in Italy, but if not, here they are.... One important point to note is that for driving in Italy, each driver must have the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. These are valid for one year, and easily obtained at any AAA office (two Passport-sized photos required, which in some case is offered at the issuing office). Failure to produce an IDP if requested can result in fines on the spot! Have a look at This Website for more detailed information. You may also want to have a look at some of the other posts here concerning the dreaded Zona Traffico Limitato areas that are becoming increasingly prevalent in many Italian towns & cities ( especially Florence!). EACH PASS through one of the automated Cameras will result in a €100+ ticket! A GPS along with a good Map would also be a good idea. Be sure to also give some thought to the question of CDW. If you accept the CDW offered by the rental firm, it will be expensive but will provide "peace of mind". Some "premium" credit cards provide rental vehicle insurance, however I've found this to be somewhat complicated so I just accept that offered by the rental firm. Check the Car Rental section in Europe Through The Back Door for further information. The fact that you'll be driving in Florence requires a bit more caution. For the Rome - Florence route, using a train would be much quicker and more efficient, and you'll still be able to see the gorgeous Tuscan scenery. Happy travels!

Lastly when driving in Italy - have toll money ready...

I always hesitate when someone has their mind made up, but have to ask, Why drive? I ask because if it is transport, the train is much easier, and maybe cheaper compared to rental cost, insurance, drop off fee. If it is to "see" the countryside, then a good portion of your day will be spent just getting from point A to B, including negotiating traffic in Rome and Florence. To roam Tuscany, I would either alot more time, an overnight for instance, and/or find a smaller town just outside of Florence or Rome and rent a car from there for a day.

Hi Mary. This question comes up from time to time on this forum & technically it IS required to drive in Italy. While most people never have to show it, it legally is required. It costs only $15 at AAA and in my opinion, it's better to err on the side of having it if you need it than not having it and needing it! You would probably need to show it if you get into an accident or get pulled over, etc. Have a great trip.

Thanks, Sheron! I agree, I think we are going to go ahead and cough up the $15 now, rather than risking more later! Thanks again,
Mary

We ALWAYS rent a car when we explore the EU....but...for the drive from Rome to Florence I'd only take the train, or the bus. Both are just wonderful on that trip. There is NO way that I would attempt to get a car into Florence. I know I'd get caught in the dreaded "ZTL,s"!

Mary, we were required to show it when we picked up our rental car. They would not rent the car to us without it.
