Driving from Verona to Dolomites (Ortisei)

Wondering what the roads are like from Verona to Ortisei? Am hoping to avoid hairpin turns, no guardrails and that type of stuff you hear about when driving through the Dolomites. Just want to go as far as Ortisei for the cable cars to Seceda and Alpe de Suisi. Thanks for any add’l info you can provide about tolls, ZTL’s, etc. Thanks!

The drive from Verona to Bolzano and then to Ortisei is easy. Beyond Ortisei the mountain roads can have hairpin curves, but not so much in just getting to Ortisei,
There is a ZTL zone in Ortisei, but it’s just the plainly pedestrianized town center and there are physical barriers put up to keep cars out.

It is Autostrada to Punta Gardena, then 2-lane road from there to Ortisei. Nothing too hair-raising if I recall. The tricky part is that the exit off the Autostrada is in the middle of a tunnel.

Verona to Chiusa is a toll highway. If you are planning to go on August avoid weekends as bumper-to-bumper queues are legendary. After Bolzano there is no place in the valley so the highway is a never ending sequence of viaducts.

The section between Chiusa and Ortisei follows the path of a former narrow gauge railway. Once I tried to count how many curves there are, but after 80 I lost count. There are not three feet of straight path but is not exposed and there are no hairpin curves.

Be sure to have a parking place in Ortisei as it could be difficult to find.

Or consider leaving the car in Bolzano and taking the bus to Ortisei...
