Driving from Venice to Slovenia

Has anyone done this? Is it easier to drive NE from the Venice airport than to pick up the car from Piazzale Roma and then drive NE to Slovenia? It just looked like too much hassle to take a train from Venice to Trieste; then a bus from Trieste to Koper, Slovenia, and then get to the rental car location to pick up the car are drive north. A 138 mile trip without the car would take at least 8 hrs!

I've done it. Venice to Ljubijana is about two and a half hours or so, it's a beautiful drive, not much traffic. You might get a slight hassle at the border but nothing major, as long as you have your passport. If you're renting a car, be sure to ask the rental agent what specific documents you'll need to cross the border, they will know.

Auto thefts are higher in former Easter Block countries (in general). If you do take a car to Slovenia, make certain that you have all the insurance coverage and upgrades that you can possibly buy and make certain that it is valid if you take the car outside of Italy.
