Driving from Venice to Sienna

I am traveling with 3 friends and we are planning on renting a car in Venice (at the airport?) and driving to Sienna where our agriturismo is. Then dropping the car in Rome and renting an apartment there. I have two questions. Would we be better off taking the train from Sienna to Florence and renting the car there and we would be better off dropping the car off in Florence and taking the train to Rome? Any advice? And any suggestions of good car rental companies in Europe. I know we have to get an IDP. Thanks for your help!

Sorry that is taking the train from Venice to Florence (not Sienna).

Especially with four people, renting in Venice would make sense. There are rental offices in the Piazzale Roma and you can drive right out and on to the Autostrade. Many people suggest ping in Orvieto and training from there. The Rome airport would be another choice to avoid driving into Rome. Autoeurope is a reputable car rental consolidator.
