Driving from Venice to Lake Garda and back

We are finishing an Italy tour in Venice, but want to go to Lake Garda. We must return to Venice to fly home. Should we rent a car and drive or take train? Where stay in Lake Garda? Why doesn't RS ever mention Lake Garda? Pat

Should we rent a car and drive or take train? I would rent a car. It's easier. By train you would need to get off at Peschiera or Desenzano and use buses. There are no trains going around the lake. Where stay in Lake Garda? Limone, Salo', Riva, Sirmione, Malcesine are all nice towns. I prefer Limone and Salo' the best, but most towns are nice. Why doesn't RS ever mention Lake Garda? He never mentions the best places that he wants to enjoy just for himself. When he's tired of a place and doesn't want to go there anymore, then he'll tell the rest of America. He's an elitist who doesn't want to share places with ordinary people. Haven't you figured out Rick yet?

Lake Garda is very popular with Germans, and especially wind surfers, it might be the Hood River of Italy. There is a new aerial tramway at Malcesine to take you up in the mountains for hiking and amazing views. RS can't go everywhere and he always advocated finding your own back doors.

We did this a few years back after a week inVenice. We rented a car and drove, spending 3 nights in Malcescine ( loved it there ) and one at Bassano del Grappa on the way back. It is worth having the car or get farther up the lake, although you could also get there by boat from Peschiera del Garda.
