Driving from Venice to Florence middle of March

We plan on staying in Venice for 2 nights and then driving to (a town?) convenient for parking the car and backpacking by train into Florence for an overnight and day of museums. Everything I read tells me driving into Florence isn't worth the challenges. We will then train back out to the parked car and continue the road trip down thru Tuscany and Montepulciano ultimately ending in Rome.

We will most likely stop in Bologna for lunch en route and looking for suggestions for a town with great character and convenience to train into Florence yet convenient for continuing on toward Tuscany. Also interested to read your itinerary suggestions and or routes that will include great scenic routes, must sees along with food and wine stops.

Why not just rent the car when you actually need it?
Train to Florence for your overnight then pick up car as you leave Florence

Make sure all drivers have an IDP and do your homework on driving in Italy

There are many posts here with directions on how to drive safely out of Florence

( Flotence is IN Tuscany)

I have to agree - the train from Venice to Florence is about twice as fast as you can drive and comes with zero parking hassles and worry. Then either rent the car in Florence or train to a smaller town - Siena, Orvieto and Chiusi are popular choices - and rent your car in a more rural setting to avoid city driving. This also means you might be able to return the car to the place you rented it avoiding drop off charges and the continue by train depending on your plans.

Check for any sagra (local celebrations of food) or festa (local celebrations) in the areas you're visiting.
Looks like March 12 may be the local saints day in San Gimignano for example.

Get and IDP before leaving the states, read up on ZTLs and preview them in places you intend to visit.

Have a great trip, rural Tuscany is as beautiful as advertised,
