I'm driving back to Fiumincino from Venice and wanted to maximize my vacation by staying in a small town en route. Just looking for suggestions and it doesn't have to be the same place for both nights but i would like to be within ~1.5 hours from the airport on the second night.
With that much distance to cover, I'd probably head as far south as possible and stay 2 nights there. Orvieto is a favorite especially if you have already seen Rome. You could also spend a night in Verona first but then you would have to spend your last day just driving.
I should have posted a little more information, I'm staying in Rome, Arezzo, Lucca, Venice and returning to FCO. I leave venice on the 24th and my flight is 11:00 on the 26th. I have read that dropping a car at the airport is fairly simple but want to get there with plenty of time to spare, which is why i want to be no more than 1.5 hours away on the second night. I thought Orvieto might be a good spot for one night but it is pushing the limit for the drive on the 26th. Can anyone add any hints for dropping a car at the airport (i.e. amount of time to allocate)? Any additional input on this would be great. Thanks,
Jim
If it were me, I would stay an extra night in Venice and then head towards FCO the next day. That's an all day drive. maybe just stop in Orvieto if it's early enough and then head towards FCO. Ostia Antica, which is my personal Italy favorite, is also very close to FCO.
