We have driven in Italy before, but next year we are going for 19 days, starting in Venice, then onto Cinque. What do you think about driving from Venice, to Cinque instead of taking the train for that portion?? Thanks in advance!!
That's definely do-able. There's a couple of different ways you could go but sticking to the autostrada it shouldn't be much more than a four hour drive.
Hello Pat,
I always take the train, but if you do drive, why not make a side trip on the way? From Venice you can hit some small towns and/or cities on the way. Some are worth a night over - which I think is the best part about driving. Here's a thought: if you have not visited Milano or Torino, you can train it from Venice, then pick up the car. From Torino the Cinque Terre is only two hours or so. Remember that a car in the Cinque Terre presents certain problems, too. Happy Travels,
Will
We've done this & the drive is pretty much a piece of cake. It's virtually all on "A" divided highways. We went via Verona and really enjoyed spending a few hours there. You could alternatively route yourselves via Bologna if you preferred.
Thanks Tom! We will gather all everyone's suggestions and take it all into account once we sit down to map our route. We want to see IT ALL!! If you think of anything else about driving vs trains just let me know. Thanks again!
Dear Pat,
Remember to resolve your CT parking problem ahead of time, especially in the May-Sept time frame.
BTW, the folks live near Angels Market on Mountain Rd!
My first thought when reading the topic was "drive from a city where cars are useless to a different place where cars are useless".
You really couldn't have picked two places in Italy where cars are anymore useless than these two places. In fact the last thing you want both in Venice and in Cinque Terre is an automobile.
Tim in Knoxville, don't worry, we've done our homework. We are not keeping a car in Venice, nor while we are in Cinque. We will rent the car when leaving Venice and upon arrival in CT give it back, then pick another one up 4 days later to drive into Tuscany for the rest of our vacation.
