Driving from Tuscany to Rome Airport

Hello - we are traveling to Italy at the beginning of October. We are ending our trip in Tuscany at an agriturismo near San Gimignano. We are spending the last night out close to Rome Fiumicino airport for a morning flight home the next day.

We can either return our rental car in Florence at the train station and take the train down to Rome and out to the airport.

Or we can keep our rental car and drive 3 hours south to the airport and return it there.

If we drive down to Rome it looks like we have the option of heading out and driving down the coast to Fiumicino, avoiding Rome altogether.

Would appreciate advice and thoughts on the best option. We have an entire day to get from Tuscany to the airport.

Train or car? Coastal drive or interior highway drive?

Thanks!

We always return our rental cars at FCO, using the Autostrada to get there.

No personal experience, but I would choose the drive down the "coastal" route vs the autostrada. Not the fastest way but as you have the day to do it, that is not a problem.

I drove north from the Foggia area along the Adriatic toward Milan and enjoyed it. Deliberately chose to avoid the autstrada.

Found a lot of the autostrada has such high guard rails that is all you can see. ( Tunnel without the lid)

I wouldn’t take the Aurelia in your case (coastal route). Unless you want to visit something specific in that area. It takes longer and portions of it are two lane highway.
I would drive the A1 down to the airport. You won’t drive through Rome. The GRA (Grande Raccordo Anulare, Rome’s beltway circling around Rome’s metro) is well outside the city.

We took the coastal route( Aurelia) and quite enjoyed it. We stopped at Cerveteri and Tarquinia to visit Etruscan necropoli. Fascinating. Easy driving. We stayed in Ferenge on the coast about 5 minutes from FCO.
