Has anyone driven the Sicilian coast? How was it? Thank you!
I did, several years ago. From Scopello all the way to Portopalo di Capo Passero, then up to Avola, with a few hours stop to see the Valley of the Temples along the way. It took me all day, although the drive itself, without the stops, shouldn't be more than 6 hours.
The road is good, but except for the first portion from Trapani to Castelvetrano (that portion is a 4 lane divided freeway), the rest is a regular two lane highway (but not too curvy so not very slow except for the occasional slow trucks). The views along the way are nothing special. You see the sea only occasionally since the highway runs mostly a few km away from the shore, and the landscape is largely dry rolling hills with few large trees (it's mostly olive trees and occasional vineyards). It's just like driving through Southern California, if you are familiar with that landscape.
Thank you much, this is great information. Now I am looking at the ferry from Naples to Palermo then drive to Agrigento the recommended route is inland which might offer some diverse scenery. A night in Agrigento then to Marina di Ragusa. We have an apartment on the beach for 12 days that will be our base to explore. Any spots not to be missed are welcome. Thanks again, very helpful in helping us plan.
I never went to the beach in or near Marina di Ragusa, so I don't know how it is. If that is where you are staying at your apartment, from there you can certainly visit Ragusa (probably less than 30 min drive), Caltagirone, Noto (both probably just over 1 hour away.
Syracuse is probably the prettiest city, along with Palermo, but to drive to Siracusa you need at least 1.5-2 hours, and there is a lot to see there, so if you visit on a day trip it will be a busy day.
Again, thanks for great information. Those are day trips we have in mind. I want to check the distance from Marina Ragusa to Piazza Armenia for a day trip. We have been to Siracusa, stayed in Ortigia a couple of times and we will return for a few days after leaving the beach, it is truly one of our favorite spots. We have toured a bit of the hills Francofonte, where my father in law was born and of course Sortino. We travel as travelers. We have done the big sites, though this is our first trip to the west coast of Sicily. We will be flying out of Catania. Thank you again.
