Driving from Sorrento to Taormina

Planning to drive from Sorrento to Taormina in one day in late October.
Google says this is about 600 KM, and 7 hours of driving.
The Caronte and Tourist ferry seems to be running 24 hours a day every 40 minutes.
Assuming a couple of hours for lunch (after all this is Italy!) and 2 hours for the waiting + ferry itself, this seems like 11 hours - a longish day but doable.

Has anyone done this drive?

I've always taken the car ferry from either Naples or Salerno but there are many videos showing the A2 on youtube.

Like all other highways, on Sundays it's trucks-free.

Better call up Autoeurope, as most agencies will not allow their cars on ferries. I suggest you change your itinerary, stay in Naples so you can take the train. The one at 9:50 is direct and takes 6:34. That's a better alternative than a flight to CTA and a bus.

I already have a booking with Avis for a one way from Florence to Palermo. My question is primarily about the road conditions and driving time. I've found Google drive times to be unreliable in rural routes in Europe (and even parts of the US for that matter).

Many say Viamichelin is more reliable for estimating drive times--it's a long day to be sure.
