Driving from Sorrento to Rome

Hi
We are a family of 4 ( 2 adults and 2 kids below 10 years) and planning to visit Capri in July for 3 days.
After that we will be going to Rome.
Whats the best and easy way to travel to Rome from Sorrento ? Can we drive ? Is it easy to find the way and can we travel on highway all the way ?

Also need advise on accommodation in Capri ? Is it easier to stay in Sorrento and do day trips to Capri and Anacapri ?

Thanks in advance

Capri is a big daytrip destination, if you can spend a night there, I would do it. The town is lovely at night and in the early morning.

If you're planning on spending all three days on the island, I would stay on the island. That would be easier than going back and forth from Sorrento every day. It is a popular - and expensive - destination so I would make hotel reservations quickly for your July dates.

You can drive to Rome but I wouldn't recommend it as you don't need or even want to have a car if you plan on staying in the city center where the large part of attractions are. The two most commonly used methods from Sorrento - which sees the most frequent amount of boat service to-and-from Capri - is to take the local Circumvesuviana train to Naples, and then another train to Rome, or private transfer to Naples and then train to the city.

We will only hire the car just to travel to Rome from Sorrento. We will not drive inside Rome city diring our stay in Rome.
Is this ok?

Our trip is from Tuscany (Chianti) - Sorrento - Rome.
Any idea if the drive to Sorrento from Chianti is easy?

I haven't driven from Tuscany to Sorrento (but I've been a passenger), there are some winding roads (especially south of Napoli), so I would pad your time estimates a little. Driving on a weekend will subject you to even more traffic.

Leaving Sorrento, you have about 25 km on the main road SS145 before joining the AutoStrada; it's not a hard road to drive, but I recall a lot of traffic; see also www.viamichelin.com. A one-day car rental is often relatively expensive, though the price is not so bad when "shared" by 4. From Sorrento to Rome, the most direct public transport is the direct bus operated by www.marozzivt.it or maybe also www.curreriviaggi.it (summer only) for under €20 per person.
