Driving from Sorrento to Orvieto

Want some advice on the drive from the above two places. After Naples, is there some places to see before arriving in Orvieto? Looking for an interesting town or village, don't mind going off the main roadway (A1) for a bit. Will want to avoid Rome, as we will have just spent quite a bit of time there before heading to Sorrento. Also wondering how easy it is to rent car in Rome and get out of city on way to Sorrento? (Our original plan was to train to Naples from Rome and get car at train station.) Thanks very much.

These are a few possibilities not too far off your route, though I haven't checked the driving times:

  • Tivoli (for the Villa d'Este)
  • Todi (Umbrian hill town; this one might feel the most like Orvieto)
  • Bolsena (small town on the side of a hill on the shore of a lake, giving it a different feel)
  • Viterbo (larger city with historic district; might want to park outside the walls; Villa Lante gardens are nice; about 3 miles away)
  • Tuscania (walled town that was shockingly under-touristed last June)
  • Civita di Bagnoregio (in Rick's book)

We once rented a car in Rome - - - sorry don't remember which company, but done through AutoEurope - - -, and the agent gave us very clear directions for accessing the Autostrada. 5 or 10 minutes later we were zipping along it.

I found that Assisi was very beautiful, somewhat magical. It's easy to get to and I think it's about half way between Rome and Orvieto. If you don't have a place to stay in Orvieto I highly recommend Ripa Medici.

Thank you as well for the last replies, very helpful. We are thinking of renting in Rome now instead of Naples. Checking out how easy it is to get out of Rome. Will look at Assisi on our way to Orvieto. Rosa, we have reservations at Ripa Medici! Glad to hear you made that suggestion, we are looking forward to staying there!

Assisi is actually northeast of Orvieto, so not on the way if you're coming from Rome. However, rome2rio says it's about a 75-minute drive from Orvieto. And Assisi is lovely.

Tivoli, Vila Adriana, Subiaco, Farfa Abbey and Casperia are all on the way to Orvieto.
