I would like to avoid going into the city of Rome when driving from Siena. Is there somewhere I can drop the car and take the train into the city?
Another choice, in addition to the ones given by Steve, is to drop the car at FCO airport (the main Rome airport) and take the express train into the city.
The airport is relatively easy to navigate to, when you're coming from the north, because it's on that side of the city, meaning that you can get to the airport without being forced to drive into or around the city (a nice thing to avoid, as you've already figured out).
We are doing the opposite of the last suggestion. We will pick up a car at FCO on Easter Sunday to leave Rome and drive to Siena. I hope that it works out ok.
For anyone who's done the drive, will there be time to stop in Civita di Bagnoregio on the way?
Siena's less than a four hour drive from the north side of Rome. Civita's right at the half way point. Why not?
I had to drop my lease at the airport. If Orvieto would have been an options for us, it would have worked well.
Yvonne,
My suggestion would be to use the car to visit Civita di Bagnoregio (which is a short distance outside Orvieto) and then drop the car in Orvieto. From there it's an easy one hour trip by train to Roma Termini.
There's parking at the base of the bridge at Civita, but I don't know if there are any charges to park there.
Happy travels!
