Driving from Saleno to Sicily (any advice)

Planning to spend a few days in Sorrento and then planning to take bus or boat to Salerno and pickup a car to drive to Sicily.

?can rent a car in Sorrento but not drive the Amalfi Coast road (not that brave)...

? if a rent a car in one place in Italy and drop off at another (flying out of FCO) is there an extra charge and if so is it reasonable or better to go back to point of rental and drop off...

? any problems driving from Salerno to Villa San Giovanni?

Thanks in advance; Jeff

any problems driving from Salerno to Villa San Giovanni?

Provided you are not afraid of driving through the mountains and across some of the highest viaducts in the world, there are no problems.

Unfortunately, if you are not looking forward to drive through the mountains etc. etc. there are no good reasons to drive from Salerno to Villa S. Giovanni, either. I'd take the ferry from Salerno to Sicily and get a car down there. Some car insurance companies accept no liability for any damages on ferries, the moment you'll see how they load cars on ferries you'll understand why.

Being worried of driving on the Amalfi Coast and not on the A2 motorway is a little strange.

Look for the best routes on viamichelin.com, it's more reliable than google maps.

It’s a long drive. I would fly from Naples.
There are no extra charges for drop off at another location.
The drive through the Amalfi Coast is beautiful although often congested.

South of Salerno you will be on a pretty straight 4 lane freeway. If you are not afraid of tunnels or heights, you will be ok.

I have driven from Catania to Sorrento. The drive is ok with a bit of interesting scenery but actually is a long boring ride. It’s about 4 1/2 hours on good roads before you get to the ferry across the Strait of Messina. Take Roberto’s advice fly from Naples to either Catania or Palermo and pick up a car at the airport.

I understand the reasoning for NOT driving if you are going to stay on the A3 and need to get somewhere quickly. However, if you are up for adventure and are not concerned about your timetable, there are lovely costal towns in Calabria that are worth stopping by. For example, Scilla is the swordfish capital of the world. Small but delightful town for a gelato stop, picking up some bergamot liquor and strolling through the historic town and port of chinalea. If you watch some of the italian shows, Solo has lots of scenes in Scilla. Another example is Pizzo which is the Gelato tartufo capital of the world. The town square is high on a hill with quite a few tartufo choices. The beach is at the bottom of the town and is quite pleasant.

Tropea is a beautiful resort town that is worth a look.

It all just depends on what you are looking for....
