My friend and I are flying in to Rome Fiumicino in May. Our plan is to travel by car to Siena directly from the airport (~10am), and to arrive in Siena by late afternoon. I have already been to Orvieto so would like to drive up along the coast via Civitavecchia and Grosseto. What interesting places along that route would make good stopping points? I know the drive isn't that long, but after flying all night I want to allow for frequent breaks to stay alert, not to mention exploring a new area of the countryside!
Capalbio and Porto santo Stefano are two options. Have lunch, some wine and sleep in the car a bit before proceeding.
Driving when under the influence of jetlag is the equivalent of driving drunk. If you know yourself well enough to be looking for ways to stay awake perhaps it is worth reconsidering your plans to do the drive.
I fly from California and always rent a car at FCO to drive north, usually to Lucca, and have never had a problem staying awake or needing to nap in the car. Just the excitement of being in Italy keeps me just fine. Stop at an AutoGrill for coffee and lunch.
Roberto, thank you for the suggestions! I will look into those towns.
Nigel, thank you for the concern and Debra, for the information from your experiences. I'm not really worried about being too tired to drive, but after years of traveling to Italy, I know the best way to get over the jet lag is to stay active on the first day. And I often enjoy the unexpected sites when driving between point A and B as much as the destination itself, so combining those two things are a win/win for me.
