HI All.
We leave for Italy in mid July, second trip to Italy but first trip to Rome and south. After 4 days in Rome we head to the Gargano Peninsula, where we have booked a place to stay for 4 nights. The day we rent our car to leave Rome and head out, we have all day to get there and wonder what route we should take along the way so that we might stop and see an interesting town or two along the way. Any suggestions? I am traveling with my husband and 2 kids (17 and 6). Thanks for any info!
The easiest route is the motorway through Caserta and Foggia. There is not much to see along this route, except the Montecassino abbey and the huge baroque Royal Palace at Caserta. As the drive is probably longer than you think, I suggest stopping only at Caserta that would be nicer for your children.
Benevento has a few Roman remnants, but you will have already seen many in Rome.
Thanks to you both for the info! Those are the two towns I see as a halfway point, so we will just see what our energy level is as to whether we want to stop for just lunch or explore. The large palace in Caserta sounds interesting, though I see mixed reviews on Trip Advisor. Anyway thanks for the tips!
