This is one of the options that we are looking at. Staying outside of Florence in a Villa and we had planned on renting a car. So, rent one in Rome? Has anyone driven from Rome to Florence? Any ideas?

You can rent a car in Rome if you can be assured of avoiding restricted traffic areas and high traffic in getting out of the city. Many, many travelers take the train 1hr north and rent their cars in Orvietto. A rental car in Tuscany is a great idea.

Many travelers posting here either do what Larry suggests, or pick up the car at the Rome airport (Fiumicino's location is okay for heading north to Tuscany).
