Driving from Rome Airport

First time to Italy and thinking about picking up a rental car at airport in Rome on landing to drive to Assisi and then on to Siena. I thought I read somewhere that you would still have to take a train 30 minutes to pick up your car. Is this true? Are there not rental cars at the airport? How complicated (crazy) is it to drive out of the airport around Rome and on to Assisi? Also does someone have experience with the parking around Assisi and Siena i.e. lots to recommend?

You can pick up a car at the airport or in Rome. I highly recommend you pick up your car at the airport.

I was just in Assisi and Siena in March. At Assisi, we parked in a lot below the town that had an escalator into town. I've got directions to the lot somewhere. If I can find them, I will send them to you.

In Siena I think the easiest place to park is at the soccer stadium. Rick Steves's book has good directions to that lot.

Sherry, Can you also elaborate on parking at soccer stadium at siena? I usually park in some pay lot with underground parking that is on north side of the walled city, very far down the hill, with a set of about 5 VERY long escalators which deposit us at the top of hill. I cannot remember if they terminate inside or outside the wall. They end up next to a church, but the church is not the main duomo Randy
