Driving from Orvieto to Sorrento

Hi,
I am in the beginning stages of planning a 2026 trip to Italy. May want to rent a car and drive from Orvieto to Sorrento, navigating around/away from Rome and Napoli. (I know train is better/faster, but still have this question). How easy is it to return the car rental in Sorrento, as I know we should not drive in the Amalfi area? Is there a town that is better for car rental return than Sorrento? Haven't planned where our final home base will be yet - just somewhere on the AC.

Thanks very much!

For a oneway rental Orvieto-Sorrento just go to the rental car websites and see what they quote. Or use a site like Kayak that shows lots of companies.

We were in Italy last month and drove the opposite direction, from Campania to Tuscany, and it was an easy drive straight up the A1 motorway. Coming the other way you’ll have the A1 until about Naples and then other 4 lane, restricted access roads around past Pompei. There are several tunnels under the mountains that speed things up too.

Good luck with the trip!

MONTH of 2026? Could make a big difference.

Orvieto is a perfect location from which to train to Sorrento. Do you imagine making picturesque stops along the road-trip? You may have an unrealistically romantic view of this long, slow trip. However, the last train link, Naples-Sorrento is on a less attractive, non-Trenitalia commuter train that is famous for heat and crowding. Some people choose a car service or taxi. Do read up on IDP, mandatory insurance, and ZTL.

Transportation, with or without a car is so crowded and unreliable in the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento-Naples area that I am not promising that you will be "happy" to have turned in the car. But you will be "less unhappy" than if you kept it!

When we left our hotel to walk to dinner five nights in Sorrento, we passed an underground parking garage with a LOOOOOng line of stationary cars, idling and waiting to enter the (pay) garage. Sorry, I can't answer your car return question. Note that Sorrento is not technically "on the AC."

It depends on the details of your stay on the AC. If you have ruled out Sorrento, then I would return the car in Salerno.

Ditto above
If you are going to the AC dropping car in Salerno makes more sense
