Our base will be near Orvieto for 4 nights. Where can we go for day trips? Also I've tried to get a rental car and even though I have heard there is one office in Orvieto I haven't been able to find it.
How far will it be to get to Lucca?
Please help... Our trip is for June.
Thanks
The Orvieto rental car operation is a Hertz office. You can go to Hertz.com or AutoEurope.com--whichever's cheaper. It's literally 100 yards from the front of the train station--across the street.
Orvieto is a very popular hil ltown and a favorite place for those to stage going into Rome. You might want to look on GoogleMaps.com to see what's around there. Asissi is to the northeast, and Civita de Bagnoregio is an incredible sight to the southwest. You've also got a big lake Lago de Bolsena to the soutwest. The A1 toll road is a controlled access highway and it's right in town--taking you easily up to Siena and Florence.
Lucca is basically north of Pisa--and Pisa's an hour west of Florence. So it's no where near Orvieto.
Thanks for the info. I will do Lucca as a day trip from Florence then.
Pitigliano is a very doable day trip from Orvieto. It is an amazing city to see. Know that the best views are on the road to the west of the town.
Hi Becky or anyone who might want to respond,
Do you think Pitigliano could be included in a day trip to Orvieto from Siena? I checked viaMichelin and it has a route going past San Quirico d'Orcia to Pitigliano on the S2 then over to Orvieto which is an hour from there. We are planning to get up early and get to Orvieto early, primarily to see the basilica. Total distance is 183 miles and return to Siena is on A1. I am really interested in seeing something like Pitigliano and have spent the better part of the last two weeks looking for another town to add. We are planning another day to drive to Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia and spend more time there.
correction: the 183 mile route has us switching to spr 61 at La Bisarca to Pitigliano instead of staying on SR2. I'll have to look it over. But mainly wonder if combining the 2 towns for a day trip from Siena sounds like a good idea.
I'd want all the time for Orvieto, but this of course is a matter of opinion. Orvieto has a couple of worthwhile museums, a large and very attractive historic district (the hill town) and plenty of good restaurants.
Thanks acraven.
I beleive you can no longer pick up a car at the Hertz office in Orvieto if you are going through Auto Europe. So if you were thinking of using Auto Europe, Orvieto may not be an option. You can still drop off in Orvieto, just not pick up.
