Google maps shows me to drive from the northern tip of Lake Como south to the main roads through Vernona, etc., then north to Trento. Can anyone tell me what the drive is like if I head directly east from Lake Como towards Trento via Sondrio, etc? Pretty? More than the 4 hours Google says? Thank you!
We drove from Reutte, Austria, through St. Moritz to Lake Como. Not the same route as to Trento, but the drive was gorgeous. Total driving time was probably about 4-5 hours, but we stopped several times to take in the scenery and for lunch in St. Moritz, making a day of it. Amazing how the road conditions changed the instant we crossed the border from Switzerland to Italy.
I was concerned about the entire drive being incredibly windy, so I zoomed in on Google earth and followed the whole route. After doing that I was much more comfortable knowing the drive would be enjoyable and not brutal for either for my husband driving or for me as the passenger.

The drive via Sondrio is very nice. It has two mountain passes, but low ones that don't close on winter. It is indeed slower than going via A4 and A23, but worth the scenery. If you have even a whole day to spare, you should drive through the Stelvio Pass and Merano, a route that will take like 6h of driving (plus any stop) but is one of the most amazing drives passing up through the Stelvio summit (15.200ft high - open June-early November only).
Thank you Karen. The entire area looks beautiful so we are looking forward to the adventure!
