My husband and I are driving from Multipulciano to Verona from April 27 - May 1st and want recommendations for various scenic small cities/villages in which we might stay for a couple of nights along or near the A-1 and A-22 freeways. Your recommendations suggestions and guidance are appreciated.

Since while you stay in Montepulciano, you probably will visit Tuscany from there, I would just go all the way to the Verona area. It's just over 3 hr drive, so no need to break it up.
If you want you could spend some time around Lake Garda for a couple of nights. Malcesine, Riva, Limone (north lake) are good.
