Has anyone tried to drive directly through the mountains from Modena to Cinque Terre? Is it worth it, or should we stick to the highway?
Thanks

The A15 freeway from Parma to La Spezia goes through the mountains (Cisa Pass).
The autostrada is beautiful and fairly easy with many good views, the local road is an endless series of curves. Stop and have a coffee in the beautiful town of Pontremoli and buy some of the local specialty - dried porcini mushrooms. https://mytravelintuscany.com/pontremoli-hidden-gem-tuscany/
Thank you very much
If you like to explore there are some very scenic and funny roads to follow. The point is: in which season? In winter you must be prepared to drive on the snow!
One could be the SS12 "Abetone - Brennero". You reach the Abetone pass than down to Lucca, Massa and then Cinque Terre.
A detour is the same route, but in Pievepelago you follow the direction to San Pellegrino in Alpe, then down to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, up again crossing the alpi Apuane to Massa, and finally direction to CT.
You can do the same route using (instead of the SS12) the Secchia river valley: Roteglia - Montefiorino - San Pellegrino in Alpe.
Another way is from Reggio Emilia, than the SS63 to the Cerreto pass, than down to Aulla and then to La Spezia.
Or from Parma the Taro valley: Fornovo - Berceto - Pontremoli - Aulla and down La Spezia.
If you like driving in the mountain there are even smaller roads to be followed, often more winding :-D
