Driving from Milan to Montecatini..considering coastal cinque terre route vs Bologna/Florence route

We are driving from MXP Milan to Montecatini and we're thinking of going the coastal route instead of down the center to Bologna and on to Florence. We are flying the red-eye and arrive around 9:00 am September 11. Also where are good spots to stop for brunch/snacks? Thank you for any advice, this is my first time in Italy!

You will LOVE LOVE LOVE Italy !

I would make a stop in Parma.

How long are you in Montecatini ? What do you plan to visit while in that region ? That might make the decision on your routing.

Thank you! We are in Montecatini for 6 days and plan on visiting Florence, Pisa, cinque terre, and maybe train to Venice! We are pouring over our Rick Steves book and maps and trying to decide the best way to use our time, which is why I asked about the best route from MXP to Montecatini- to maximize our experience!

It's not a bad idea to avoid the Milan freeways, often congested for one reason or another. I've taken that route a few times. It's actually faster than via Bologna, especially if your destination is Montecatini. Take the A26 down to Genoa then proceed toward Livorno on the A12. At Viareggio follow directions to Lucca and Firenze to the A11.
Rest areas along Italian freeways are equipped with restUrants, mini malls, food stores, even hotels, etc in addition to gas stations. The company that has the concession for highway restaurants is called Autogrill and their food is excellent. Stopping at one of those rest areas will enhance your Italian driving experience. Just look for the exits to AREA DI SERVIZIO or service area. There is one every 10 or 20 miles.

Load up on espresso if you feel sleepy.
Driving while jet lagged may not be ideal (or even dangerous) if you haven't had a chance to sleep on the flight. Be careful.
