Driving from Lucca to Siena

We have an upcoming trip to Italy and will be spending a few days in Lucca and a few days in Siena. We are considering renting a car in Lucca and driving to Siena rather than traveling by train or bus. We would prefer taking a scenic, relaxing drive where we can spend the day taking our time traveling between the two cities, perhaps stopping somewhere for lunch along the way. We would pick up the car in Lucca and drop it off the same day in Siena. We already have hotel reservations in both places and want to make the trip in a single day. We would be grateful if anyone could recommend routes, places to stop for lunch, or any other advice on considering doing this...

There are lots of options. You didn't mention how much time you would have. The direct route is E76, then to Empoli and down SR429 to SiFi autostrada. This will take you close to San Gimignano, through Certaldo, by Monteriggioni, and into Siena. All good places to have lunch. You could even do a side trip to Volterra if you have the time. These roads can be time consuming however.

Taking E76 to Montecatini Terme then south to Empoli you will come close a cute little town of Vinci, which has a museum Leonardo's inventions and a couple of restaurants. Get a good map or GPS.

Along the SiFi there are Autogrill's. If you haven't experienced an Autogrill you should.
