We will be driving from Florence to Montepulciano in May and wish to take the scenic routes through the Tuscan countryside. Is the S 222 route through Greve, Radda, Gaiole, to S 326 connecting Rapolano to Asciano to S 146 through Pienza into Montepulciano a doable one day drive or is there another suggested route? We will spend two nights in Montepulciano before heading to Orvieto and Rome.
It's a pretty drive, but you won't have time to do much stopping. The roads are narrow and twisting, but not much traffic. I'd guess five hours of road time once you clear Florence to the south. I've driven the whole route, but no in the same year. The only other way is straight down the E35 which will put you to sleep.
Yikes, which part would you recommend as a "must"? What if after Gailoe in Chianti we took S484 to S73 and S 326 and then south on 327? The next day we could tour west towards Pienza/Montalcino.
I'm going nuts here. Your route numbers don't match my maps. My first response was simply logically connecting your towns along the back roads. The best part is from the Florence southern bypass to the E78. Run that - - if you're making good time, press on along your route to Montepulciano if not, take the freeway and you'll be there in an hour or so. The backroad into Montepulciano is just more of what you will have already seen, unless there's something special along there that interests you.
I think my problem is I need a more detailed, easier to read map! I'm glad to have discovered this problem before getting to Italy. Thanks!
