Rented a car from Hertz at Via Borgo Ognassanti 137/R. In Florence. What is the best way to get to the scenic route 222 through Chianti to Siena. Any touring / lunch suggestions would also be appreciated. Thanks.
if you have a smart phone or tablet, the app Waze is really good. Here are two other websites that might help https://www.viamichelin.com/web/Routes and https://www.rome2rio.com/. When you need to refuel I suggest you look for manned gas pumps or at least pump just a little bit at first an unmanned station before you try to fill the whole tank to make sure you know how to work the pump/that the pump is working correctly. We saw lots of people at the station we went to (including but not only - US!) lose money.
A couple of years ago we made the same trip and stopped at Castello di Verrazzano for their tour and "snack". I did not reserve early enough to get their tour with lunch but the snack turned out to be a feast. The lunch however looked lovely , dining outdoors under a vine and trellis. It was one of the highlights of our trip.
Thank you for your suggestions. I do use Rome2rio. It is a great resource. Most of the apps want to take me on the fastest route to Siena and do not direct me to the longer 222. I am also concerned with driving out of Florence to 222. I know driving on Florence is a concern and want to b sure I know where I am headed.
Any suggestions.
The only thing you really need to worry about is driving straight without any turns from the Rental office until you reach the main highway around the city ; is very close ; Rt. SS67 on a map
it does not matter in that initial step to leave the ZTL what road you want to take to your next location or what direction you are headed.
Looking at a map of where 222 starts ; it would seem your best option would be to circle around the downtown area on SS67 ; getting off on Via Marco Polo which would be a right turn and 222 starts off of that road.
You would not cross the Arno until your turn onto Via Marco Polo.
By the time you reach Via Marco Polo there are no more ZTL's for Florence in your case so the concern is over by then.
That is fairly direct ; just make sure to stay straight onto the highway and then stay on SS67 until Via Marco Polo and you would be fine and not be in ZTL trouble.
I would definitely recommend WAZE or similar GPS to make sure you follow the course.
Second Kathleen's suggestion.

We did it in 2015 and this in 2016

Both have excellent wine and food.
They are near Greve.
If you do Florence-Greve-Siena, the 222 should pop up on rome2rio. I normally print out directions from via Michelin.
We just took this route and Waze is the best way to navigate. Hertz also provided us with the GPS in the car (no extra charge). I also would recommend if you have time to take the tour and have lunch at the Castello di Verrazzano: http://www.verrazzano.com. It is a nice tour of the winery and the lunch is amazing. We couldn’t check into our agriturismo near Siena and it was a perfect break and lunch. The meal was so filling that we actually didn’t have dinner. Just picked up some crackers, cheese, and then had that with our wine at our agriturismo.
Enjoy the trip. It is a beautiful drive.

Lunch in Panzano at Enoteca Baldi or at one of famous butcher Dario Cecchini’s ( google him) restaurants there.
There are so many charming towns in addition to Panzano-Greve, Castellina, Radda (visit Ceramiche Rampini) We have stayed in all of them and think driving the SR 222 is the perfect way to see Chianti.
Direction to the start of 222

These directions below are a little easier and faster, but it puts you on the 222 just before Greve, therefore you’d miss the first few miles. I prefer this route because it goes through the Val di Greve and between il Ferrone and the Passo dei Pecorai there are some beautiful pine forests, which I hope they didn’t clear to make room to more wineries.
