Driving from FCO to Spoleto

Can anyone please give me an idea of the traffic/road conditions around Rome Fiumicino Airport? It looks pretty removed from central Rome so I'm wondering if I can handle renting a car at FCO and driving to Spoleto, where we've booked a stay.
I've driven around France with no issue, but that mostly in the countryside. The biggest town/city I drove in was Avignon.
I've been to Rome before, but only used public transport, and was never at FCO.
Thanks!

It will be 100 miles in total of which the first 85 (from FCO to Terni) on 4 to 6 lane freeways, and the last 15 (from Terni to Spoleto) on a regular two lane highway.

Traffic on the Rome A90 beltway circling the city, aka G.R.A. (Grande Raccordo Anulare = Grand Annular Beltway), will largely depend on the time of the day you are traveling. It gets busy at rush hour.

"freeway" is a bit of a misnomer as there are tolls on some of those 4 & 6 lane highways.

Motorways / Divided or Dual Carriageway highways
..sometimes free (like US interstates), sometimes not so free (like Florida Turnpike)

Thank you folks. All multilane highway sounds more manageable to me than intercity driving!
