Hello everyone, well just a few weeks and we will be on our Italy Trip. After our Rome visit we are heading to Sovicille in the Siena area. We were told by our B&B to take the coast road up to them. this is what they said
(the shortest one is going by the coast. I have to tell you that sometimes there can be quite a bit of traffic on that road because it goes towards Civitavecchia (where there is the harbour),
I never thought of this route. My husband who is driving was going to take the Autostraida ( A1) then cut over to Siena area.
I would love to drive the coast road but I don't think I've seen any comments on it.
I would appreciate your views.
Thank you
Pat
From Rome city center the A1 is faster and also shorter.
From Rome airport the coastal route is slightly faster and also shorter.
Either way the difference in time of travel is not dramatic, so it's really up to you.
Both are multi lane freeways, except that on the coastal route the portion between Tarquinia (north of Civitavecchia) and the border with Tuscany is not (it's a two lane highway), as that portion hasn't been completed yet. The speed limit on the A1 is higher too (130km/h vs 110km\h). The portion from Grosseto to Sovicille is largely a two lane highway, but it's a fast one.
If you take the coastal route, consider visiting any or all of the following, if you have the time.
Tarquinia (Etruscan town)
Capalbio
Porto Santo Stefano and the Mt. Argentario Peninsula.
Grosseto (historical center)
Massa Marittima
The last one is somewhat of a detour, so maybe you can visit it as a day trip once you are settled in Sovicille.
Do a Google Image search of the above amped see which you'd like to see.
Roberto. Thankyou for this wonderful information. We will google the places you have suggested
Coast road it is !!
