Driving from FCO airport to Agriturismo near Montalcino- Good half way stop &route??

My family group of 11 is driving in 4 vehicles (9 adults and 2 toddlers) from the Rome Airport to Tuscany (Montalcino) at the beginning of October.
Can anyone recommend a nice half way spot to stop in a town on the way to have lunch? I am aware that the drive should be less than 3 hours in length, but with 2 toddlers we plan to break half way.
I also know it is hilly in Tuscany and communicating between vehicles may not be possible- so I'd like a clear route for our group.
It looks like there are 2routes:
1 From FCO take the E80 until Grosseto and take the SS 223
2From FCO take the E80 until Montalto di Castro and take the SR 312- maybe stopping at Valentano. I know this is longer but getting off the E80 might be nice.

Also I read on this site that there is a bad part on the E80 (I think??)- lots of accidents. does anyone know anything?
I misplaced this information.
Many thanks in advance for any recommendations. :)

Capalbio?
Porto Santo Stefano?
Slight detours in both cases, but worth it.

I don't know what bad part you're talking about. It's a 4 lane freeway most of the way. There is a small portion, from Albinia to more or less Pescia Romana, that it's not a freeway, but a two lane highway. Not sure if you are talking about that unfinished portion. Not sure why it would be more dangerous than any other fast 2 lane highway. Just be careful passing on that segment because front end collisions hurt.

Take E-80 to Orbetello, and you'll find good restaurants there. It appears to be about half way. TripAdvisor covers the city.

Since your group is so large, I have a fun suggestion for lunch. Stop at an Autogrill on the Autostrade!

It's nothing like fast food you get in the states. There's fresh salad and wonderful Panini. There's great coffee and even wine. It's also part of the culture and should be part of your Italian experience.
