Driving from Dolomites to Sorrento

Hello,
Me and my husband are going to Italy this June, we will be going from the Dolomites to Sorrento, yes I know is a long drive, and we don’t want to drive all at once, so we are looking for suggestions to towns in the middle of the itinerary where we could sleep for one night and continue the journey, of course we would like to take advantage of any nice towns to visit for a couple hours and grab something to eat.
I know there is the option of Firenze or Roma, but we will be going back to those places later before leaving to go back home, so ideally we want suggestions of a town that would be a nice stay in hour drive between the Dolomites and Sorrento, a quick sightseeing with some options for lodging and food.

Thank you all for your help.

Is there a reason why you are driving all that way instead of taking trains, which could be cheaper, faster, and more comfortable?

IMHO Firenze and Roma would not be real options, if you have to drive all the way to centers of towns, and tackle ZTL areas. Florence has a couple luxury hotels not so distant from the highway, but near the highway the areas are half industrial. I would choose a small town along the road. Sinalunga or even Orvieto would be my first thoughts.

I have to agree with the previous posters. There is no sane reason to have a car on the Amalfi coast so I don't see any reason to drive there. If you were going Pienza and doing a week in rural Tuscany that might make sense, but not Amalfi.

If you really want a place to stop Arezzo and Orvieto are about half way. I know Arezzo has a big parking garage to keep people out of the city so it would be easy jaunt off the highway and the town is nice to visit. I'm not sure about the parking in Orvieto but it would be easy to find out about parking in the lower town and the taking the funicular up.

If you have a car in the mountains Verona might make a sensible place to drop off a car and switch to a train but it depends on where in the Dolomites you will be.

Hope that helps,
