My fiance adn I are thinking of driving to Lake Como for 2 nights after 3 nights in CT (after 3 nights in Florence) before heading to Tuscany and Umbria for several nights. Is this too much of a drive or is Lake Como worth it? The other alternative is to head to Emilia Romagna for a couple of nights, but i'm not familiar with this region.
Both the CT and Lake Como are two places where overnight parking is very difficult. And a car is a useless headache at both places: the CT because there are no roads connecting the 5 towns and Lake Como because you can't get a decent view from the roads, the postcard views are to be had from ferries in mid-lake.
We'd rent a car after CT and if we go to the Lake, would base ourselves in one spot and travelling around/across the lake by ferry.
If you drive a car to Lake Como, highly recommend that you only book accommodations that state to you, in writing by e-mail, that they will provide you with overnight parking. You'll know why I recommend this after you're there and will be glad you went to the extra effort to do so.
Thanks, Kent. I'll definitely keep that in mind! Have you been through the Emilia Romagna region? I'm wondering if the 4 hour drive to LC is worth it, or if we should explore the ER region?
